Mixed media polish workshop scheduled for Saturday at the Volcano Art Center

Join artist Mary Milelzcik for the “Mixed Media Encaustic” workshop from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday. The class will take place in a unique tropical forest setting in a covered outdoor space at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Encaustic is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin and pigment, which is applied to a solid absorbent surface. Every time a new layer is applied, it needs to be merged. Layers can be enhanced by sculpting with tools or drawing with pigments, oil sticks, etc. Photographs can be transferred and other materials integrated.

Mixed Media Encaustic is a hands-on workshop where you will learn safe studio practices, all the basics of encaustic painting and how to create your own medium. Polishing techniques, photo transfer, as well as wet and dry shellac burns will be demonstrated. After instruction and experimentation, you will have the opportunity to create two encaustic paintings to take home with you.

Class fees are $ 65 for non-members or $ 60 for VAC members plus a $ 40 supply fee. To register, call Volcano Art Center at 808-967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org. Space is limited.

Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.
