New Delhi: A Pulitzer-winning Kashmiri photojournalist was barred from flying abroad on Saturday by immigration authorities at the airport here who cited restrictions imposed by Jammu and Kashmir police.

Sanna Irshad Mattoo was on her way to Paris to attend a book launch event and take part in a photography exhibition when she was arrested by immigration authorities at Delhi airport.
“What happened today was totally unexpected,” she said. PTI.

In a tweet, she said: “I was due to travel from Delhi to Paris today for a book launch and photography exhibition as one of 10 winners of the Serendipity Arles Scholarship 2020. Despite winning a ‘a French visa, I was stopped at the immigration desk at Delhi airport.’

“I was given no reason but was told I couldn’t travel overseas,” she tweeted.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former union minister P Chidambaram, was among those who reacted on social media. “Indiscriminate use of the LOC (surveillance circular). A tool to harass all critics of this regime,” he said.

Mattoo alleged that immigration authorities gave her no reason to stop her from flying, except that she could not travel abroad because there were restrictions.

Jammu and Kashmir Police officials have confirmed that Mattoo has been placed on a no-fly list. Earlier, Kashmir journalists, activists and academicians were arrested at the airport.
