Shenzhen Low Carbon City International Convention and Exhibition Center / TJAD Original Design Studio
Text description provided by the architects. Shenzhen Low-Carbon City International Convention and Exhibition Center is located in Longgang District, Shenzhen, China, beside the ecological Dingshan River. The three existing venues were the venue for the first “Shenzhen International Low Carbon City Forum” in 2013. In December of the same year, after the completion of the renovation, the “2021 Carbon Peak Carbon Neutral Forum and the 9th Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Forum “-Carbon Forum” took place. The main bodies of the three venues (low-carbon exhibition hall, low-carbon conference hall and low-carbon trade hall) before the transformation were steel frame structures. The rooms were huge with monotonous and closed interior spaces. They were unable to meet the conference requirements for organizing conference business and displaying low carbon technology concepts. Under the constraints of the existing conditions, the limited intervention design strategy is adapted to open the closed external interface, dissolve the huge scale of the place itself, and connect it to the natural ecological shoreline of the Dingshan River by softening and redesigning the site. Taking the Hall of Breathing, Corridor of Vitality, Boxes of Ecology and Hills of Growth as our overall planning structure, we will create a “low carbon city” where we can breathe freely, grow naturally in the environment and truly integrating green into everyday life”.
The breathing room. We retain and strengthen the main functions of the three main buildings: low-carbon exhibition hall, low-carbon conference hall and low-carbon trade hall. Then we modify and remove enclosure components that pose potential safety hazards depending on the environment. The ground floor space is open to form the internal and external pathway association system that can be visualized and imagined. The original steel structural frames are retained and repainted to reflect the building’s original features and low carbon architecture concept in a cool white color. The original exterior walls partially retreat into the frame and the facades are changed from closed to open, thus eliminating the feeling of pressure on the environment caused by the enormous volume. At the same time, we leave many transition zones between the site and the interior space to create an ethereal breathing room.
The Corridor of Vitality. We use the existing steel structure between the three sites to create a vibrant corridor filled with greenery. The Corridor of Vitality extends to the lake to connect the collection of low-carbon processed food from containers and spans the Dingshan River, which becomes an ecological bridge connecting the two banks. During the period of low carbon conferences, it is a public service axis of the conference. In daily life, it is a leisure experience zone for people to live a low-carbon life.
Ecology Boxes. Ecological box of functional units, it is disseminated in the site and the buildings. Some of them are stacked on the vitality of the gallery, like a place for people to interrupt the conversation, some are placed in the architectural interior space, becoming office meeting spaces with the function of air-conditioned ecological garden , while others are scattered on the landscape system of the site and the Dingshan River Bridge to become outdoor recreation observation facilities, establishing the connection between the building and the site.
The hills of growth. The Squares of Ecology extend over the site and become the Hills of Growth with different characteristics. Among them, “Hill of Softness” is to soften hard-rolled water at the original site into layer after layer of environmentally friendly falling water. “Hill of Pile Stones” is a continuous landscape platform formed by the system of folding planks laid over the original hard exterior steps. “Hill of Trees” is a continuous, layered walking path formed around a raised banyan tree in the central courtyard. “Hill of Memories” is a winding and extended ecological experience course combined with a group of preserved trees. Different shapes of these hills spread out and grow on the site depending on the relief, forming the landscape index of the site.
Low carbon food market. The low-carbon food market is located between the main building and Butterfly Lake, which is a group of service buildings constructed by joining container modules. The container units are prefabricated in the factory and assembled as a whole on site, which is a kind of mobile unit type green building. By combining the gray-white container volume with the gray-green hallway system, we create a modern courtyard space with different landscapes. During the forum, it can be used as a reception and light catering function, while serving as a support room for the leisure services of citizens during ordinary hours.
Low carbon city. With the design goal “Nearly Zero Energy Building, Zero Carbon Park”, the building community itself has become the largest exhibition of the Low Carbon Forum. The roof of the main building adopts high-conversion monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic panels and high-efficiency inverters. The annual production of renewable energy in halls A and B is greater than the annual energy consumption of the terminal. The rate of use of renewable energies in Hall C is 69% and the carbon reduction rate for the park is 95.3%. The design and construction process incorporates 120 applications of green and low-carbon technologies, integrating green exposure and experience, making the project a true “low-carbon city”.
