Strong athletics contingent from Loughborough heading to European Championships | sport

On the eve of the start of athletics at the Commonwealth Games, British Athletics today announced that the 115-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland team will compete at the European Championships from 15 to August 21 in Munich, Germany, with Loughborough-bound athletes representing more than a quarter of the squad ready to take on the best in Europe.

Current Students Bekah Walton – Javelin (Coach: David Turner), Seamus Derbyshire – 400mH (Nick Dakin), Jessica Judd – 10,000m (Mick Judd), Holly Bradshaw – Pole Vault (Scott Simpson), Molly Caudery – Vault pole vault (Simpson), Charlie Dobson – 200m and 4 x 400m (Benke Blomkvist), Alex Haydock-Wilson 400m and 4 x 400m (Blomkvist), Ben Pattison – 800m (Dave Ragan) and Matt Stonier – 1500m (Chris & Sonia McGeorge) will be joined by 23 other athletes who are either Loughborough alumni or currently training at the Loughborough High Performance Training Centre. Biomechanist and Loughborough University intern Nils Bogaard will also travel with the GB&NI team as part of the Sports Science Support.

Emma Wiltshire, Loughborough Athletics Program Manager, said: “This is an exciting and busy time for Loughborough Athletics. We have athletes coming back from the World Championships and preparing for the Commonwealth Games; Loughborough hosts Team England immersion camp; we have staff as team coaches for the England team at the Commonwealths, and others in Colombia for the GB&NI U20 World Championships. Today’s European selection highlights that Loughborough is the UK’s leading university for producing and supporting athletes, and we are extremely proud of this achievement.
